Kristi’s Story: “When I’m Happy, the Whole Family is Happy.”

I got my first glasses at 15, in the final year of basic school. I sat in the back row and increasingly had to squint just to see the blackboard. The text on the board was blurrier than ever, and focusing became harder and harder.

Yet I kept postponing the visit to the eye doctor. There was always something more important to do, or I thought it might get better on its own. And, being a teenager, I didn’t want to become a “glasses nerd.” On top of that, I was scared that my lenses would be thick like bottle bottoms — my friend’s were exactly like that.

When I finally went for an eye exam and got my first pair of glasses, they weren’t nearly as bad as I’d feared. I wore them only at school — at other times, they stayed hidden.

Five Years Later – Delayed Again

This time, as an adult, the same pattern repeated. I had already noticed that my eyes got tired more quickly and that distant objects were no longer as clear. But, as always, family and everyday tasks got in the way. I thought I could wait a little longer.

It wasn’t until I realized I was squinting at traffic signs while driving that I understood I could no longer postpone an eye exam.

I last had a vision check this June at Pere Optika in Saaremaa. I was pleasantly surprised when the optometrist turned out to be someone I knew from childhood — it immediately made the visit feel much more relaxed. The exam was thorough, and the optometrist kept me informed throughout.

It turned out that my vision had slightly worsened and I needed stronger glasses for distance. The specialist also emphasized not to add too much “minus,” as it could interfere with reading and close-up work. While choosing lenses, I was able to look out the window and assess how everything appeared in the distance — a very convenient way to pick the right prescription.

New Frames and a Clearer World

Choosing frames has always been a challenge for me. This time, my son and the friendly store staff were a great help. I tried on several pairs — I wanted something lightweight and subtle, suitable for both everyday use and more formal occasions.

In the end, I settled on gold, airy Vogue frames that felt immediately right. About a week later, I got my new glasses and put them on the moment I stepped out of the store. The world instantly became clearer.

Getting used to the new look only took a few days, but the improved vision was worth it. Driving became especially joyful — I could see traffic signs and road markers from a distance, which really lifted my mood.

Everyday Life with New Glasses

Life with my new glasses has become much more comfortable. My eyes get tired less, I hardly have headaches anymore, and everything is sharp and clear. I’ve also received several compliments — people say these frames suit me perfectly.

I feel confident and no longer feel embarrassed wearing glasses. On the contrary, they’ve become a part of my look and personality. I’m also planning to get another pair soon — something a bit bolder, colorful, and playful, so my glasses can also be a stylish accessory.

Lesson Learned

I plan to go for my next eye exam within a year. Leaving as long a gap as last time—five years—definitely shouldn’t happen. Worn-out or outdated glasses can strain your eyes and even worsen your vision.

For anyone experiencing eye irritation or noticing their vision decline, I recommend not waiting to schedule an eye check. Delaying it won’t improve the situation—in fact, poor vision can affect your mood and overall well-being. With the right glasses, life becomes much easier.
